Paynesville Maritime Museum is dedicated to researching, recording and retelling the maritime heritage of the village and surrounding area of Paynesville on the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia.

Since the first fishermen decided that it was a suitable place to base their fishing activities the village grew to be:

  •  A major supplier of fish to the Melbourne markets
  • A builder of steamships for the Lakes
  • Port of call for the steamers
  • Home of the unique “Lakes” fishing boat and its builders

and now, in its second century, has morphed to be the centre for recreational boating and fishing.

Paynesville Maritime Museum operates a small museum display which tells the story of maritime Paynesville with photographs, artefacts of the time and representations and has been the recipient of many kind donations of equipment etc from local families. The museum is open on the second Sunday each month from 8.30 to 12.30 in conjunction with the Lions town market which makes for a full morning of activity.

The museum also has an enthusiastic group of researchers who are using modern technologies to find and store the stories of the past.
